The Legend of the Whale – The “Guardian Deity” of the Seas
In 1994, the journey of Whale Island Resort began with a trip across Vietnam by a French – Vietnamese couple, Mr. Michel Galey and Ms. Lan Phuong. Upon their first visit to Hon Ong, they were captivated by its pristine beauty: green mountains embracing the sea, crystal-clear waters, and more than 1,600 coral reefs stretching beneath the ocean. In that moment, they knew they had found a “hidden gem” – a place where pure nature meets captivating experiences that touch the soul.
The Van Phong Origin
Sometimes, all it takes is a journey far away to find the peace hidden within the ocean. Here, every experience on Whale Island is also a way to support and preserve the marine environment.
SUSTAINABILITY PHILOSOPHY
- 95% of staff are from the local community.
- ZERO single-use plastics.
- Reduce – Reuse – Recycle.
- Powered by solar energy and micro-hydropower systems.
- Organized beach cleanups & glass bottle upcycling.
But the dream of turning this place into an unprecedented resort was not easy. At that time, Hon Ong was still under military management, with almost no infrastructure. Undeterred, they started with the simplest things: setting up tents, building sample houses, and transporting materials to the island one by one. Step by step, amidst countless challenges, they remained steadfast in their belief that the beauty of Whale Island deserved to be shared with the world. Their perseverance was rewarded in 1996 when the resort was officially established, and two years later it was ready to welcome its very first guests.
At Whale Island Resort, more than 95% of the staff are local community members with a warm and friendly nature. They are not only provided with stable employment but also trained in tourism skills, from service and culinary preparation to accident response and first aid, ensuring guest safety. For many, this is an opportunity to build a long-term career and support their families in their own hometown.
With basic facilities including a kitchen, restaurant, bar, six room categories, and a sail house for water sports equipment, Whale Island Resort has attracted international guests, especially adventure seekers and diving enthusiasts. Many of these early visitors have returned multiple times, captivated by the island’s romantic charm. They find peace in its pristine scenery, where they can leave their worries behind and relax in the gentle embrace of the sea breeze and the soothing rhythm of the waves.
