The Legend of the Whale – The “Guardian Deity” of the Seas

Legend that during his journey to defend the nation, Emperor Gia Long’s boat was once caught in strong waves in Van Phong Bay. At a critical moment, a group of whales appeared, lifting and supporting the vessel, guiding the emperor safely to shore. Grateful for this life-saving act, he bestowed upon them the title of “General of the South Sea.” Since then, the worship of Cá Ông has spread widely, and the island where this sacred event took place came to be called Hòn Ông – as a tribute to the ocean’s guardian.

In 1994, the journey of Whale Island Resort began with a trip across Vietnam by a French – Vietnamese couple, Mr. Michel Galey and Ms. Lan Phuong. Upon their first visit to Hon Ong, they were captivated by its pristine beauty: green mountains embracing the sea, crystal-clear waters, and more than 1,600 coral reefs stretching beneath the ocean. In that moment, they knew they had found a “hidden gem” – a place where pure nature meets captivating experiences that touch the soul.
